Lately, Basti Ram has recognised the work we have been doing in the UK (the
Beyond Boundaries Project) and the work we do in India (education, construction
and renovation and healthcare). We decided we want to merge the two and design
a diaspora volunteering programme that could do both.
I hear you say what does Diaspora mean? Well quoting Wikipedia (the
most reliable source ever Ha) it ”is the
movement, migration, or scattering of people away from an established or
ancestral homeland" or "people
dispersed by whatever cause to more than one location, or "people settled far from their
ancestral homelands". In short if you are British Indian (or even American Indian...you get the gist) and have
either never been to India or only a few times and you want to discover more
about your own heritage or help those living in rural, isolated areas of India
this may be the programme for you!
So the different projects you can be involved with:
Volunteering
in India on one of our teaching, construction and renovation or healthcare
programmes. This is open to anyone of Indian descent living in the UK, US or anywhere else in the world apart from India. If there is something specific you would like to do email us on info@bastiram.org. We are open to new ideas!
Heritage Lottery
Fund. This project is based solely in the UK and for British Indians. We aim to organise an event
at the end of the project to help the group fundraise to get the chance to volunteer in India.
i.
Young Roots - is a grant programme designed to engage young people aged 11-25 with
their heritage. Young Roots projects stem directly from the interest and
ideas of young people, who are supported by youth and heritage organisations to
develop skills, build confidence, and connect with their local communities.
We are currently looking to recruit a group of
young people for this project! We have identified some heritage organisations and are now looking for the young people. Take a look at the website and if it is of
interest to you give us a call! Young Roots
ii.
Your Heritage – This is a similar project but aimed
at adults. Again if this is of interest give us a call. Your Heritage
