Global Commitments and Change

If you are on this page you maybe wondering where does Basti Ram's work and also your personal volunteering fit in with global commitments and change.

All of Basti Rams efforts support the United Nations (UN) Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In 2000, 189 countries made a promise to free people from extreme poverty and multiple deprivations. This promise became the eight MDGs to be achieved by 2015.

Of the eight goals Basti Ram focus on:

Goal 1: Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger
Goal 2: Achieve Universal Primary Education
Goal 3: Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women
Goal 5: Improve Maternal Health
Goal
Target 1.B: Achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all, including women and young people.
We have designed a project that aims to improve outcomes for a group of young boy's living in a destitute boy’s home in Rajasthan. Whom at age 18, leave the home and enter hazardous work because they are unequipped with skills or knowledge. This project will equip the boys with the skills and knowledge to find decent employment. They will learn life skills, become employable and gain a sense of self- worth.

Our women's empowerment project also falls under this target, but you can read more under Goal 3.
Goal
Target 2.A: Ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling.
All our teaching volunteering programmes aim to contribute towards this goal. Volunteers design and deliver energetic, engaging lessons to a generation of children from underprivileged families who are new to formal education. Based in a school that has a desperate shortage of teachers, volunteers teach the English and numeracy parts of the Hindi curriculum, boost creativity by running art sessions and work with a team to promote the benefits of education across the community.
Goal
Target 3.A: Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education, preferably by 2005, and in all levels of education no later than 2015.
For girls in some regions, education remains elusive. Poverty is a major barrier to education, especially among older girls and women are largely relegated to more vulnerable forms of employment.

We are looking for funding for our Women's Empowerment Project. This project focuses on the most disadvantaged and vulnerable women in Udaipur, Rajasthan. New skills will be taught to the local women and girls; so they can use to earn a living to support their families. Our volunteers work alongside hired local tradespeople to support the ladies in learning new skills.
Goal
Target 5.B: Achieve universal access to reproductive health
Only one in three rural women in developing regions receive the recommended care during pregnancy. Poverty and lack of education perpetuate high adolescent birth rates.
Goal
Target 8.F: In cooperation with the private sector, make available benefits of new technologies, especially information and communications.
We always interested in new ways we can work with the private sector. For instance, the Mobile School Library project some of things required is 10 laptops, the software for the laptops, a printer and camcorder. These things have to be incoorporated into the budget - we are especially interested in working with the private sector who can supply these new technologies in helping to achieve Target 8.F.
